AN INTRODUCTION TO D-COM
Falcon Wireless is part of a worldwide communications group with locations in Birmingham, AL, New York City, Los Angeles, CA, Rutland, VT, and Taipei, Taiwan. What makes us a little different is that we have the ability to talk directly to each other by toll free 2-way radio through an amazing system we refer to as D-COM, an abbreviation for Digital Communications Operations Management.
Voice over IP has been around for a long time, but we use a system that provides 2-way radio capability over the Internet along with data, GPS, and messaging capability. Additional information on this system, known as D-VIP is available at either of two web sites, http://falconfamily.tripod.com or www.dvip.net.
Manufacturerers and their suppliers have long used 2-way radio, and more recently, the Nextel system to provide efficient in-plant communications. No one ever dreamed that it was possible to provide personal 2-way radio communications between plants anywhere in the world or for these same 2-way radios to receive text messages from anyone on the Internet using a PC!
The DP405 personal 2-way communicator shown here has worldwide communications capability when used in conjunction with the DP1000 Radio Router and an Internet connection. Priced at just $995, the DP405 costs no more than a good quality radio such as the Motorola HT1000. The DP405 has individual, group, multiple sub group, and all call capability using standard UHF frequencies. Unlike conventional 2-way radios, the DP405 uses secure digital voice encryption than is monitor proof. The DP405 can be operated as a conventional radio or through the RadioRouter repeater for extended area communications and direct connection to the Internet via an appropriate connection. Priced at just $995 or available on a three-year lease purchase for just $33 monthly, the DP405 provides an efficient alternative to conventional radios as such as Nextel.
T he companion repeater used with the DP405 is the DP1000 RadioRouter, a companion UHF repeater, IP router, and Internet connection through dial-up, DSL or cable modems, ISDN, T1/3 or fiber as you choose. The basic RadioRouter is priced at $9,995 plus antennas and installation cost that typically add 10% ($995) for an in-plant operation. The three-year lease purchase rate on the RadioRouter with installation is $365 monthly excluding maintenance.
When connected to the Internet, the RadioRouter provides worldwide access to other RadioRouters and associated DP405 transceivers as well as PCs on a local LAN that may wish to send text messages to DP405s. Optional telephone interconnect capability adds $995 ($33 monthly on the lease purchase plan). This provides telephone-dialing capability in the standard DP405 on a half-duplex basis as a free optional feature.
In a typical in-plant operation, the D-COM system compares quite favorably. A typical Nextel system consisting of 25 units would have an average monthly cost of $1,250 monthly (Assuming an average of $50 per unit monthly). Twenty DP405s with a terminal including optional telephone interconnect capability would be $1,223 with the added benefit that the system would be COMPLETELY PAID FOR IN JUST THREE YEARS!
By adding an Internet connection, the D-COM system can provide person-to-person communications in other plants equipped with the system ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD!
